You’re Just One Second Chance Away

A few years ago, I met a young man at the mall and approached him. At that time, I was an Army recruiter and asked him if he wanted to join the Army. However, he told me that he had gone to my office before, but was told he wasn’t qualified due to a felony on his record. I asked him why he was told that, and he explained the situation.

I told him that I couldn’t promise him anything, but I would try to help and take him through the process if he was willing to do the work. Luckily, I had been studying the waiver process and exceptions to the rules. Spent a lot of time with him and helped him through the thick stack of paperwork. One night, we went to a restaurant, and he opened up to me about his struggles. He explained that it was difficult to find a place to live because of his felony record. He could only afford to live in dangerous areas, which made it easy for him to get into trouble again.

Eventually, I was able to help him join the Army, and he got an Honorable Discharge when he left. Six months before I retired from the Army, I received an email from him. He had turned his life around, and he was living in a nice neighborhood without any record on his name. He just needed a second chance at life, and I was happy to have given him that chance.

Now, I help people who need a second chance to find an apartment. If you need help, just holla. Remember, sometimes all it takes is a second chance to achieve your dreams. Stay cool.
